Redox reaction, in plain English
'Redox' is short for reduction-oxidation. A handy memory aid is OIL RIG: Oxidation Is Loss, Reduction Is Gain (of electrons).
When an enzyme oxidizes a fuel molecule, NAD+ accepts two electrons and a hydrogen ion and becomes NADH. Later, NADH is oxidized back to NAD+ as it hands those electrons on.
- Short for
- Reduction-oxidation
- Oxidized
- Loses electrons (NADH → NAD+)
- Reduced
- Gains electrons (NAD+ → NADH)

How it connects
How redox reaction relates to NAD+
NIH notes that NAD and NADP are needed in most of the cell's redox reactions. The ratio of NAD+ to NADH works as a readout of a cell's redox state.
For your treatment
What redox reaction means for NAD+ therapy
'Redox balance' shows up often in wellness marketing. NAD+ is genuinely central to it, but that alone doesn't prove NAD+ products improve health.

Questions
Redox reaction: common questions
What is a redox reaction?
A redox reaction is a chemical reaction in which electrons move from one molecule to another: one is oxidized (loses electrons) and the other is reduced (gains them). NAD+ and NADH are the cell's main electron carriers.
Is NAD+ oxidized or reduced?
NAD+ is the oxidized form; NADH is the reduced form.
Is oxidation the same as oxidative stress?
No. Oxidation is a normal chemical step. Oxidative stress means reactive molecules are building up faster than the body can neutralize them.
Will NAD+ therapy give me more energy?
That hasn't been shown in healthy people. NAD+ is essential for making ATP, but taking more hasn't been proven to raise energy.
Does exercise affect NAD+?
Exercise has been linked to higher NAMPT, the NAD+ recycling enzyme, in muscle in research studies, and regular activity supports healthy aging.
Should I see a doctor about tiredness first?
Yes, if it's new or lasting. MedlinePlus lists many causes of fatigue, including anemia, depression, medicines and sleep disorders.

- MoleculesNAD+NAD+ is the oxidized form of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, a coenzyme found in every living cell. It carries electrons for energy metabolism and is used by enzymes involved in DNA repair.
- MoleculesNADHNADH is the reduced form of NAD+. It carries high-energy electrons from the breakdown of food to the electron transport chain in mitochondria, where they help make ATP.
- MoleculesNADP+ and NADPHNADP+ is NAD+ with an extra phosphate group. Its reduced form, NADPH, supplies electrons for building molecules such as fats and cholesterol and for the cell's antioxidant defenses.
- Cell energyElectron transport chainThe electron transport chain is a series of four protein complexes in the inner membrane of mitochondria. It takes electrons from NADH, passes them to oxygen and uses the energy to make ATP.
