NADP+ and NADPH, in plain English
Cells add a phosphate group to NAD+ to make NADP+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate). Like NAD+, it switches between an oxidized form (NADP+) and a reduced form (NADPH).
The two pools do different jobs. NAD+ mostly helps break food down for energy, while NADPH powers building reactions, such as making fatty acids and cholesterol, and helps recharge antioxidants like glutathione.

- NAD+ plus a phosphate
- Reduced form
- NADPH
- Main job
- Building molecules, antioxidant defense

What NADP+ and NADPH means for NAD+ therapy
NAD+ therapy targets the NAD+ pool. Whether extra NAD+ changes NADP+ or NADPH levels in people hasn't been well studied.
- Free online consultation with a licensed U.S. provider
- NAD+ nasal spray or injection, plans from $166 a month if prescribed
- NAD+ has no FDA-approved use; compounded NAD+ isn’t FDA-approved
Questions
NADP+ and NADPH: common questions
What are NADP+ and NADPH?
NADP+ is NAD+ with an extra phosphate group. Its reduced form, NADPH, supplies electrons for building molecules such as fats and cholesterol and for the cell's antioxidant defenses.
What's the difference between NAD+ and NADP+?
One phosphate group, and a different job. NAD+ mainly helps break down food for energy; NADP+ and NADPH mainly help build molecules and protect cells from oxidative stress.
Do NAD+ products raise NADPH?
That isn't well established in people. Most human research measures NAD+ itself rather than NADP+ or NADPH.
Does NADMedics NAD+ contain NADH or NADP?
No. NADMedics nasal spray and injections contain compounded NAD+. Your cells convert NAD+ into NADH and NADP as they need them.
Can a blood test measure my NAD+?
Research labs can measure NAD+ in blood, but it isn't part of routine care and there's no agreed normal range doctors use.
Why do NAD+ levels fall with age?
Research reviews point to more NAD+ being used by enzymes such as CD38 and PARPs and less being recycled. Most of that evidence comes from lab and animal studies.

- MoleculesNAD+NAD+ is the oxidized form of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, a coenzyme found in every living cell. It carries electrons for energy metabolism and is used by enzymes involved in DNA repair.
- MoleculesNADHNADH is the reduced form of NAD+. It carries high-energy electrons from the breakdown of food to the electron transport chain in mitochondria, where they help make ATP.
- Cell energyRedox reactionA redox reaction is a chemical reaction in which electrons move from one molecule to another: one is oxidized (loses electrons) and the other is reduced (gains them). NAD+ and NADH are the cell's main electron carriers.
- Vitamins & precursorsNiacinNiacin is vitamin B3, an essential nutrient the body turns into NAD and NADP. It includes nicotinic acid and nicotinamide and comes from foods such as poultry, fish, nuts and grains.
